201D: Block of the Month Paper Piecing - Day Class

Mariner’s + BOM

1. Classes will be held on the 1st Wednesday of each month beginning March 1, 2023. Class will begin at 1:00 pm and end no later than 5:00. If needed, a second class will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm. We anticipate this project will run at least 12 months. This will depend on students’ needs. No one should feel rushed.

2. Instruction/demonstration will be provided for the assigned block(s) for each month. Some independent work will be required to complete each month.

3. Each month, students will be provided with the current month’s pattern(s). Fabric and other supplies will be responsibility of student. Supplies are available at Rae's Quilt Shop if needed.

4. Students will need to bring a sewing machine, basic sewing equipment and supplies to each class. Specific supply requirements for each month will be distributed at the session prior. Cutting and pressing stations will be provided.

5. Techniques taught will include but not be limited to: Rotary Cutting, Basic Piecing, Curved Piecing, Paper/Foundation Piecing, Set-in Seams

6. Cost of this class is $30 for the complete series.

7. Finally, most importantly, this class will be fun! We want you to feel very proud of your fantastic final product. If at any time you need assistance beyond the normal class time, please do not hesitate to call for addition help. This project may appear challenging but you will be amazed how easy it really is.

8. “Like eating an elephant, one bite at a time.

Materials Included:
Can be purchased at Rae's Quilt Shop if not already owned.
Requirements:
Mariner?s + BOM -- Suggested Tools/Supplies Foundation Papers Rotary Cutter Serger Tweezers Scissors ? paper Scissors ? fabric Surgical Seam Ripper Seam Ripper Machine Needles ? 14 Tri-Recs Ruler Small cutting mat Ruler Flower Pins Snips SewLine Glue Pen Glue Stick Tape Thread ? Neutral color - Good quality 50wt, fine thread. (I use Superior Masterpiece Thread) Sewing Machine (I do not use these but many find them useful, I will be demonstrating their use) Add-a-Quarter Ruler 6? and/or 12? Straight Edge ? Template Material Fabric ? This can be very scrappy or semi scrappy or color themed, your choice. Use your stash, gather fat-quarters or small cuts of many fabrics, the more fabrics the more the eyes keep moving and the less mistakes are visible. For the backgrounds, you can use one, two or many. I prefer many, again keep the eyes moving. Batiks can be used on both sides so for paper piecing they cut down on waste, but regular cottons work fine. Feel free to combine the two. I use whatever fabrics fit my color or yardage needs. Some of these blocks are large so some of the pieces are large. Rae's Quilt Shop has all required tools and supplies in stock at the moment if you need them. Thank you!
Instructor Name:
Lynda Newell
Instructor Bio:
I was born and grew up in Seaside. OR a really long time ago. I attended Seaside Schools. I spent more than 30 years in pupil transportation as a School Bus Driver, Driver Trainer and ultimately an Administrator in the Portland area. My husband Steve and I are in our 58th year of marriage. We raised three children, and have 8 Grandchildren and, so far, 11 Great-Grandchildren.
I have sewn since I was in Broadway Middle School but didn't start quilting until the early '90s. My first quilt was a Giant Dahlia. I am self-taught. I've never been detoured by someone's opinion that a project is "too hard". I jump into projects that I like and learn the processes I need to know. I believe one can learn the process of making more challenging projects just as easily as so called "beginner" quilts. One step at a time.
I have been very active in the Peninsula Quilt Guild for many years and have displayed many quilts in the annual quilt show. I am a member of the Clatsop Quilt Guild and looking forward to growing that. I have formed many close friendships with many wonderful quilters.
Let's have fun.
